What is email routing?

Email routing determines how your server handles incoming mail for a specific domain. Here are the steps:

  1. Log in to cPanel:

    • Access your cPanel account using your credentials.
  2. Navigate to Email Routing:

    • Click on the Email Routing icon. You’ll find it in the Email section.
  3. Select the Domain:

    • Choose the domain you want to configure email routing for. If you have only one domain on your cPanel account, it will be automatically selected.
  4. Choose an Email Routing Option:

    • You have three options:
      • Automatically Detect Configuration:
        • The system analyzes the local zone file entries to configure email routing based on the following criteria:
          • Local Mail Exchanger: The lowest numbered mail exchanger points to an IP address on this server.
          • Backup Mail Exchanger: The lowest numbered mail exchanger points to an IP address not on this server.
          • Remote Mail Exchanger: No mail exchangers point to an IP address on this server.
        • Note: This detection is based on local zone file entries and doesn’t perform an actual DNS lookup. It won’t automatically update if changes are needed.
      • Local Mail Exchanger:
        • The server always accepts mail for this domain and delivers it to the local mailbox.
        • Choose this option if your server uses smart hosts or another gateway service for mail filtering.
      • Backup Mail Exchanger:
        • The server acts as a backup mail exchanger, holding mail until a lower-numbered mail exchanger becomes available.
        • You must configure the primary MX record to point to the appropriate exchanger.
      • Remote Mail Exchanger:
        • The server won’t accept mail for this domain. All mail goes to the lowest-numbered mail exchanger.
        • Again, configure the primary MX record accordingly.
    • Click Change to apply your selection.

Remember, proper email routing ensures efficient mail handling. If you’re unsure which option to choose, consult your system administrator or hosting provider. And if you’re looking for reliable web development services, consider exploring DanumHost – your trusted partner!
